Fourteen

I paced back and forth in my room, waiting for Polly to call me back. I had absolutely no idea what was going on, and I was apprehensive and nervous. I thought I could win this, but I’d realized I didn’t even know what game I was playing. I needed to tell Polly what had happened last night. I needed her to know everything, and I needed her to know that Nico couldn’t be trusted, just like Jake couldn’t be trusted.

My phone rang, and I grabbed it immediately. “Hey, Polly?”

“No,” a familiar voice drawled. “It’s me.”

“Jake?”

“That’s me.”

“What’s going on?”

“I just wanted to remind you of something.”

“Remind me of what?”

“To remind you we don’t talk about last night.”

“What do you mean we don’t talk about last night?”

“I mean, no one knows about last night.”

“Okay…?”

“And that includes your friend, Polly.”

“Why can’t I tell her? She’s my—”

“Listen to me carefully. Polly cannot know about last night.”

“Why? And why is Nico there with her?”

“Nico’s with her?” He paused. I could tell that he was surprised.

“Yeah. I called her already, and Nico picked up the phone and—”

“Nico picked up Polly’s phone?”

“Yeah. Didn’t you know they were together?”

He cleared his throat. “Of course I knew.”

“You didn’t know.”

“Of course I knew,” he said again.

“Sure. So why is he there?”

“You need to understand one thing, Tiffany.”

“What’s that?”

“As much as you think as you’re in control of this situation, you’re not.”

“I never thought I was in control—”

“Listen to me carefully, Tiffany. I can help you get your family business.”

“What? How?”

“Do you want it?”

“Of course I want it. But why would you help me get it?”

“I have my reasons.”

“And those reasons are?”

“For me to know.”

“And am I going to find out?”

“No,” he said.

I bit back some choice curse words. “So you’re going to help me get my family business? What do I need to do?”

“Go to the library.”

“Go to the library for what?”

“I’ve left you something.”

“What did you leave me? A pair of edible panties?”

He chuckled. “Why would I leave you a pair of edible panties?”

“I don’t know.”

“I can get you some vibrating ones if you want.”

“No, thank you.”

“Actually, I might like that. With a little remote control I keep.”

“You wish.”

“I do wish. And if you want your family business, then you will wear them whenever I say.”

“You don’t control me. You can’t tell me what to do or what to wear.”

“I think you’d like it, though.”

“Excuse me?”

“Remember, you need to spice up your life.”

“I don’t need to spice anything up.”

“Yes, you do,” he cut me off. “Now go to the library.”

“Um, I’ll go when I’m ready.”

“I know you’ll go as soon as we get off the phone.”

“You don’t know that.”

“Trust me, Tiffany Newton, I know you very well.”

“Whatever. Anyway, I have to go.”

“Just remember,” he breathed.

“What?”

“We don’t talk about last night—to anyone.”

He hung up. I stared at my phone, confused. Why did he care if I told Polly that I slept with him? I chewed on my lower lip as I stared at the door. I wanted to go
